Reweaving Service

Reweaving service is a highly specialized craft which returns damaged cloth to its original attractiveness and durability. It involves hand weaving thread strands over holes, burns and tears to create virtually invisible repairs. The process requires patience, a sharp eye and fine motor skills as well as the use of hooked needles and magnifying glasses. Depending on the nature of the garment and its fabric, different reweaving techniques may be used.

FIBERS:
For knitted fabric, reweaving uses threads from hidden areas to repair a hole. The process is very effective for most types of woolen fabrics. However, certain patterns and very light or dark colors do not weave well. It is impossible to guarantee that this type of repair will be completely invisible, but it is the best option for restoring fine or delicate fabrics.

HAIRS: Reweaving can be used on a variety of fabric, including linen and cotton. However, the outcome of the repair is less reliable than for knits. The outcome will depend on the color of the fabric, its size, and whether or not it has a pattern or sheen. Generally, larger or more pronounced hairs do not blend as well as woven fabric.

PATTING: Patching a damaged area of a sweater with a matching fabric patch can be an effective repair. However, the result can vary significantly and it is difficult to replicate the appearance of the patch without changing the fabric’s texture. This technique is not recommended for repairing moth holes or any other damages which are too large to be repaired using other methods.

SEWING: Sewing is an excellent method for repairing seams and stitching loose buttons. It is not, however, effective for repairing larger or more visible damage to fabrics such as snags, burns and holes.

REWEAVING: There are two different types of reweaving, French Invisible Weaving and Thread Weaving. French Invisible Weaving is a very meticulous process that can make the smallest of holes almost completely disappear. The reweaver takes threads from an invisible part of the garment such as a side seam or hem and weaves them into the damaged area, closing the hole and making it almost completely invisible. This is the most expensive type of reweaving.

Thread Weaving is the second most costly method of reweaving and can be used on any size of hole or tear. It involves taking hidden strands of the garment and weaving them into the damaged area, again with great care to match the pattern and the weave of the fabric. This is a very effective repair for most woolens, but some patterns like gaberdine can show the repair quite easily. The reweaver must also consider the colour of the damaged area and the density (thickness) of the fabric in order to determine what type of thread to use.
