I still see myself in Tecmo Bowl. I'm still playing an old videogame. I have the game that I can play the game on. But it's in a box in storage. It's iconic. It feels good to know knowing that I have grown-ups in their 40s telling me"Hi, my cousin and I were involved in the biggest conflict of our lives, because we all wanted to be in Tecmo Bowl when we were young. Our parents saw us fighting in the game and my dad locked it in his tool cabinet. The game was unplayable for a month due to the fighting was so intense. I hear it a lot. When I go to sporting memorabilia events, people come up with that video game. They'll say, "I've own the machine that I play it on. My kids play it. My grandkids love it ... as does everybody continues to argue about who is going to play Bo Jackson.' Tecmo Bowl ... that was a lot of technology in the past. When you look at it today and it's like, "Wow this is an old fashioned.'
Are you sure that you've never had the pleasure of playing Tecmo Bowl?
I have not played Tecmo Bowl. It's true. I have watched people engage in it often. However, I knew what I could accomplish. I was aware of what the Tecmo Bowl man could do. It gives me pleasure hearing people compliment me on that day's game.
The video game portion of your return to Madden includes celebrating Nike's iconic Bo Knows campaign. Let us go back to the beginning. How did the brand introduce the idea for Bo Knows to you?
We came across Bo Knows accidentally. Writers, directors, sketchers and we had been sat at a table discussing storyboards to shoot our next project. We decided to trim it down because it was slightly too long. Everyone was offering their opinion about this or that. I just said, 'Why why don't we try this? ... How would we not shift this over here, put this there, then combine it, and cut off 5 or 6 second?' And they glanced at me , and they said 'Wow. That'll probably work. Then someone across the table glanced towards me with a smile and replied "Bo Knows!' and it stuck. It was not like anyone sat around and ran through their thoughts or stayed up late in search of that catchy slogan. The incident just occurred while sitting around the table discussing shootings.
